Playa Grande · Costa Rica
Skies & Sand
The sky over Playa Grande changes by the hour. On wet sand, you see it twice.
Low tide
Mirror days
At low tide a thin film of water covers the sand, and the sky lands at your feet. Cloudy days make the best mirrors.

When to go
Walk out around low tide, ideally late afternoon. Find the thinnest sheet of water and get your camera low.

Every evening
Sunsets
Most days end the same way here: everyone stops what they’re doing and faces the ocean.

Don’t leave yet
Stay ten minutes after the sun goes down. When the clouds are right, the afterglow turns the sky pink and purple.
December to April
Blue days
Bright sun, warm water and kilometers of sand with hardly anyone on it.

Dry season
Long runs of blue sky and very little rain. There’s almost no shade on the sand, so bring a hat and water.

May to October
Green season
Dramatic skies, afternoon showers, rainbows, and the forest at its greenest.

Rainbow season
A light shower most afternoons, then clearing skies. Stay on the beach and watch for rainbows.
